Coin Dimension – 2D vs 3D

A 2D coin is a standard challenge coin struck from a die mold, whereas a 3D coin employs an extra technique to extend areas up off the face of the coin.

2D coin designs are ideal for flat, simple images. While 2D coins may not capture the same level of depth as their 3D counterparts, they can still be a great choice for designs that benefit from clean, sharp details and unique customization options, because the biggest advantage of 2D coins is their ease of adding color.

3D coin designs offer more intricate details like sculpted shapes and rounded edges. They are perfect for more realistic, detailed graphics that benefit from additional depth—think statues, mascots, buildings, or emblems. To achieve this, the design requires more than just two metal levels. A separate mold is crafted specifically for the 3D elements, transforming the coin into a kind of shiny, miniature sculpture. 3D coins also pair beautifully with antique finish, which highlights the raised details. However, be mindful that 3D designs are best suited for larger coins; smaller sizes may cause intricate details to get lost.
